Historical Context & Story:

An Irish royal monk, scholar, and missionary born in Donegal and educated under St Finnian, Columba allowed his temper to spark a dispute over a copied psalm book, which escalated into the bloody Battle of Cúl Dreimhne (Cooldrevny) in 561, leaving 3,000 men dead. Devastated by guilt, he went into exile in Scotland as penance, founding a monastery on the island of Iona with 12 companions to convert as many Scots and Picts as had perished in the battle. Through his energy, preaching, and miracles, Columba converted the northern tribes and became a trusted councillor to kings before dying on Iona in 597. His monastery grew into a renowned pilgrimage site, royal burial ground, and the eventual birthplace of the illuminated Book of Kells, one of Ireland's greatest national treasures.
