Feast Day: 22nd June
Historical Context & Story:
Born around 1469, John Fisher was the son of a merchant educated at Cambridge University, where he served as Chancellor alongside his role as Bishop of Rochester, living simply and caring for the poor. A stout defender of Catholic doctrine, he was the only bishop in England to resist Henry VIII’s break from Rome, refusing to sign the Act of Supremacy or take the oath required by the April 1534 Succession Act, which repudiated the Pope and validated the King's marriage to Anne Boleyn. Imprisoned in the Tower of London, Fisher stood firm despite repeated pressure to swear the oath; while incarcerated, Pope Paul III created him a Cardinal, further infuriating Henry VIII. Charged under the newly passed Treason Act for his refusal, Fisher was tried on 17 June 1535, found guilty of treason, and executed at Tower Hill on 22 June 1535.
