Morning Prayers:

An act of worship should be made every morning.  This should include:

  1. a pause for reflection on the question for the day
  2. joint reading of the quote from the Bible
  3. an individual (a student or teacher) reading a prayer for the day

The prayers/reflections can be taken from this resource or from:

Theme for the week – Vocations

Question for Day 1:

What do people gain by becoming priests, monks or nuns?

Quote for Day 1:

So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”

John 20:21

Prayer for Day 1:

Grant Lord, that those who you call to enter the priesthood and religious life may have the generosity to answer your call, so that those who need your help may always find it.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen

(St Benedict’s Prayer book)

Question for Day 2:

How can I understand and appreciate the work priests do in the world?

Quote for Day 2:

“For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us” Romans 12: 4-6

Prayer for Day 2:

God our father,

We pray for those whom you have called to serve your people as priests.

Every day, may they live in your presence

and deepen their friendship with Jesus, your Son.

Fill them with your Spirit, inspire them to be faithful in prayer

and always place their trust in you.

May they grow in faith and compassion

as they celebrate the sacraments of your love,

bring good news to the poor and heal the broken hearted.

Inspire then to live in such a way that they are credible witnesses

of the transforming power of your love,

as they share the hopes and the joys

the sorrows and the frustrations

of those entrusted to their care.

Give them the gifts they need

to accompany your people along the path of holiness. Amen

(Nicholas Hutchinson)

Question for Day 3:

What does the sacrifice of Jesus mean to me?

Bible Quote for Day 3:

“Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power” 2 Thessalonians 1:11

Prayer for Day 3:

Father, increase our family’s love for one another. May we honour each other in times of happiness or hardship, bearing with one another in love, just as You love us in a special way, help us strive for holiness in our current states of life. Together, we make heaven our goal, and pledge, with Your grace, to help each other on life’s journey to You. Through the intercession of the Holy Family:

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.

Amen

(World Day of Prayer for Vocations)

Question for Day 4:

How can I understand and listen to God’s plan for me?

Bible Quote for Day 4:

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.” John 15:16

Prayer for Day 4:

Save us Jesus from hurrying away, because we do not wish to help,

because we do not know how to help,

because we dare not.

Inspire us to use our lives serving one another.

(A New Zealand Prayer book)

Question for Day 5:

How can I live my life to best show that I am doing God’s work?

Bible Quote for Day 5:

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free” Luke 4: 18

Prayer for Day 5:

God our Loving Father, you called each of us by name through the Sacrament of Baptism to holiness. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, you made us the temples of the Holy Spirit. Help us to listen to the cry of our Lord Jesus from the Holy Cross ‘I thirst’ and respond to the call ‘Go out to the whole world and proclaim the good news to all the nations’. Guide us in every step we take in life and lead us in every decision we make in responding to your call.

Make us and mould us into the living images of Christ your Son, who was always close to those in need. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord,

Amen.

(Prayer for Vocations Sunday)

Bishop Richard Challoner

During his lifetime and after his death, he was considered not only as a model of every virtue but as a saint. We are asked to pray that our Blessed Lord, through the Pope, may reward him further, by raising him to the altars of the Church as a Saint.

Prayer for the Beatification of Bishop Richard Challoner

O God who made your servant Richard,

a true and faithful pastor of your little flock in England,

raise him, we beseech you, to the altars of thy Church,

that we, who have been taught by his word and example

may invoke his name in heaven,

for the return of our country to belief in the Gospel,

and to the unity of all Christians in the one Church of Jesus Christ.

We ask this through the same Christ our Lord.

Amen.
