Job opportunity!

GroundForce has just taken on a big new contract and we’re looking to expand. We’re keen to give a chance to a young person in year  13 leaving Richard Challoner this summer, who might be hoping for a practical, outdoor job who might be interested in training up to be a horticulturalist or sports turf operative but maybe hasn’t decided exactly what they want to do yet. Sadly, we can’t easily offer an apprenticeship as all the colleges that do Sports Turf apprenticeships are at least two hours away by public transport, although we could send someone to Merrist Wood to do a horticultural apprenticeship if they were more interested in that side – or they could just start with us, get a flavour for both and then discuss formal training if they’re fitting in and enjoying it after six months. This is a full time permanent vacancy, not a holiday job. We’re ideally looking for an 18 year-old, even better if they can drive. The most important thing is that they’re decent, hard-working, nice people with a sense of humour who would fit into our team.

come and see Mrs Stansbridge if you would be interested in applying

The acceleration of AI technology has been one of the many surprises of 2023. Both have a point. Just because we can do a thing, should we?

Could ‘gamifying’ application processes be an accessible way forward?

Phil Steventon

In one application cycle, I made it all the way to the assessment centre. But one of those stages stuck out to me, and I believe that this step could be applied to more job application processes to benefit neurodivergent applicants. Not just for training contracts, but for any job. That stage of that particular application process was a ‘gamified’ behaviour-based assessment.

Year 12 careers cafes

On Monday 4th July 2022 John Harris (Deputy Head of Science, Engineering and Technology at Kingston College who leads L4 and L5 courses in engineering and Schools Partnership Co-Ordinator Richard Fisher from Kingston College and Gareth Burden from National grid came to do our first careers café.

The premise being a relaxed opportunity to hear about sectors of industry and for students to be able to ask questions.

Those that attended found it interesting, but I think the turnout didn’t make for a great start.  Rolling these out next academic years they will be open to years 11,12 and 13 and run once a term.

On Thursday 7th July we had David Anstee (Family Law Solicitor at KWW Solicitors)
Susie Burley (Future Family Law Barrister) come to talk to students about legal careers and Vera Bermingham, speak about admissions hints and tips and what applicants should think about.
Feedback was positive from both and would love to run these sessions again for a wider audience.

Student feedback included:

  • More research into my career
  • Look into volunteering and research projects more in preparation for my UCAS application.

What areas of industry would you like to have a cafe session on?

  • Maths and Computer Science
  • Apprenticeship
  • Biology/science

Dates for 2022/23 to be confirmed soon- programme for the year will appear here.
